Better Coordination Needed for Research
Fire research has come into its own in recent years. Excellent work by many governmental agencies on the Federal, state, and local levels, including fire departments as well as universities and colleges and private organizations, is encouraging and the effects are being felt in many areas. That there is room for much greater effort is unquestioned, and those organizations now engaged in the many projects probably realize this fact better than those of us who merely attempt to weigh what has been accomplished or attempted to date.
One group which has come into prominence in recent years is the Committee on Fire Research and Fire Research Conference of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council. Its publication, “Fire Research Abstracts and Reviews” contains excellent condensations of reports on world-wide activities in line with the committee’s efforts to bring this work to the attention of all interested persons. Supporting this group are the Department of Defense, the Department of Agriculture through the Forest Service, the Office of Civil Defense, Department of Defense, The National Science Foundation and the National Bureau of Standards.
