Bernardsville, N. J., Company’s Filters Completed

The Bernardsville, N. J., Water Company has completed its new filtration plant which has been under construction at Osborn’s Pond. This plant was under construction for the past six months and was finally completed and put in operation about two weeks ago. It will probably be another month before the full benefit of the improvements will he felt as the standpipe and pipe lines must he thoroughly cleansed. The design of the plant was furnished by A. E. Hansen, Engineer, 2 Rector street, New York City, who generally supervised the new construction, and his plans received the approval of the State Board of Health, without change. The work at the pumping station has been directed by Superintendent W. S. Abel. The filtration plant, when put in operation, worked perfectly from the start. The engineers from the State Board of Health at Trenton, have given their approval of the work of installation and declared at the time of the inspection of the plant that it pas delivering filtered water at the rate of 1,497,000 gallons per day, which is nearly ten times the daily consumption of the Township in winter and six times the daily consumption in summer. Samples of water collected by the representatives of the State Department of Health, both at the pump house and in the village, now show a complete absence of turbidity and of intestinal colon bacteria, and this in spite of the fact that, according to the Department, the filter has not yet reached its maximum efficiency which is scarcely to be expected in so short a time after putting it into service. It should be said a complete spirit of co-operation now exists between the State Department of Health and the Water Company. The Bernards Water Company is now prepared to furnish the town as pure a water as any other similar community receives in the State. As a financial investment, the Company has proven most disappointing to its stockholders. While able to pay its running expenses, it has not paid a dollar in dividends since its separation years ago from the Electric Light & Power Co., with which it was formerly connected.
