Auburn Asks an Extension.

The water muddle at Auburn, N. Y., took another turn last week, when the commissioners sent a note to the company asking for an extension. After offering a number of apologies, the communication continues : We therefore ask the company to consent (and to appoint and authorize a committee to execute in its behalf such papers as may be necessary to effectuate such consent and agreement) that said contract may remain, without action, in its present condition, and its performance held in abeyance without prejudice, if not hereafter performed by the city, to any legal right the company may have by reason of the failure of the city to perform on July I, 1893, and at the end of any quarter hereafter, the company having been heretofore given at least sixty days’ notice of the ability and desire of the city to pet form, said contract may be executed and carried into effect the same in all respects as if executed on July I, 1893 ; or if the company prefer that the time of performance of said contract be extended, for a definite period, extend it for three months from July 1, 1891, with the privilege of three months additional if desired by the city, and proper notices given of such desire.

If neither of these propositions are satisfactory, we would be greatly obliged if the company would indicate to us, at as early a date as possible :
