Assistant Chief of Dallas Dies
Assistant Chief E. O. (Charlie) Jones of the fire department of Dallas, Texas, and in charge of the Oak Cliff district, died at the St. Paul Sanitarium on August 18 from injuries which he received at the fire which destroyed the plant of the Texas Wheel and Body Company on June 30. Chief Jones’ death makes the second fatality from this fire, as Captain Bert Burris was killed at the time of the fire in the same collapse, both of them being almost completely buried under tons of hot bricks. Captain Burris died shortly after being taken from beneath the debris and Chief Jones had several ribs broken and was crushed about the body and hips, his injuries, it is said, being of such a nature that they would have caused the death of most men in a very short time.
Chief Jones, however, was a man of powerful physique and strong constitution, and made a valiant fight for his life. He lingered for several weeks and at one time it was thought that he would win, but about ten days ago his condition took a turn for the worse and death resulted.
