Another Fatal Fire — Eleven Lives Lost

Blaze in Montpelier, Vt., with Apartments on Upper Floors, Traps Sleeping Tenants—5-Alarm Fire in New York—Week’s Burnings

ANOTHER fire, in which eleven lives were snuffed out, is to be added to the long list of fatalities which have characterized the record of the past two months. This was in the Lawrence Building in the center of the business district of Montpelier, Vt., in the early morning hours of February 15. The flames, apparently originating in an explosion in the store of Peck Bros., hardware dealers on the first floor of the structure, shot up the stairways so quickly that the escape of most of the tenants was cut off. Added to this was a dense smoke which filled the corridors and stairways and rendered escape by these means impossible.
