ANNUAL WATER REPORT OF WALTHAM

The forty-second annual report of the Waltham, Mass., Water Department, Daniel J. Higgins, superintendent, for the year ending January 31, 1915, has been issued. In it Superintendent Higgins states that the financial condition of the department is of the best. The total amount of loans to be paid from the sinking fund is $103,000, of which $10,000 will be paid April 1, 1915, and October 1, 1915. The total amount of serial bonds paid from water works maintenance account is $93,000, of which $13,000 will be paid during the coming year. The total water debt is $206,000. The amount paid into the sinking fund during the past year was $3,700. During the coming year there will be $3,700 paid from the same source. The total cost of the works to January 31, 1914, was $837,894.36. There was expended during 1914 as per appropriations: $17,146.56, making $855,040.02, less receipts for 1914, $3,217.95, making $851,822.97. The following water bills were made in the office and sent to the city treasurei for collection: Rated water bills, July, 1914, $28,657.21; January, 1915, $26,641.45; metered water bills, April, 1914, $8,921.60; Tulv, 1914, $9,270.85; October, 1914, $10,093.59; January, 1915, $12,211.39; total, $95,796.09; fractional bills, $5,270.25; total assessments, $101,066.34: total abatements, $2,160.78. The personal property of the department is valued as follows: Office at city hall, $1,292.25; No. 1 station, $4,311.00; No. 2 station, $3,157.03; shop and stable, $9,244.10; total, $18,004.38. The main pipe laid in 1914 consisted of 4-inch, 788.9 feet; 6-inch, 3,578.9 feet; 8-inch, 1,616.7 feet: 10-inch. 593.6 feet. The department laid for fire and domestic service: 4.790.9 feet of 1inch and ¾-inch at cost of $2,448.12; 235.7 feet of 1 1/4-inch at cost of $124.77; 199.5 feet of 2inch at cost of $134.43; total $2,707.32. 255.7 feet of 8-inch pipe for fire service, 182.4 feet of 6-inch pipe for fire service, 121.7 feet of 4inch pipe for fire service, $982.04. Number of domestic services laid, 78; domestic services relaid, 43; domestic services cleaned, repaired, etc., 189; fire services laid, 4.
