一个不寻常的Fuel Oil Furnace Fire

Fuel oil is a fire hazard which can be safeguarded to some extent by the installation of automatic valves, etc. While every mechanical safety device may be provided and function properly, the human element is still a factor as indicated by the following fire:

The blacksmith shop, in which the fire originated, was of frame construction, 50' x 170', adjoining and communicating with the tender and machine shop, 95' x 270', built of similar material. At one side of the blacksmith shop, near the end, there was a stationary oil furnace of the type commonly found in railroad shop properties, supplied by oil from a tank outside above ground. The supply pipes ran underground to a point near the furnace, then above ground, to the two burners, one a high pressure and the other a low pressure burner.
