An English Type of Water Meter
The water meter illustrated is a type recently introduced in England, being the invention of a well known scientist, the late Lord Kelvin. It will be noted that it bears strong resemblance to the Venturi but its action is somewhat different, while the construction of the recording mechanism is rather simpler. Referring to the sectional drawing. Fig. 2, it will be observed that the water passes through a nozzle shaped casting (a) which is made of bronze. The rapid convergence of this nozzle causes a high velocity at the point (b) where the water jumps the space between portions (a) and (c) passing into the outlet cone (c) in jet form. Those who are acquainted with the Venturi principle will recollect that one of the peculiarities of it are, that water issuing from a cone wdl enter another . and —..... rise in - a vertical pipe connected thereto thus producing the seeming anomaly of water, after being at atmospheric ptessure, (in the air space between the cones) flowing up hill.
The water when jumping the space (b) in the meter under discussion, which it may be remarked is called the “Conjector” meter, causes a vacuum at that point and enters the outlet cone (c) in jet form as stated.
