AN AFFLICTED FAMILY.
A few days ago Henry W. McAdam, formerly the highly esteemed chief instructor of the New York city fire department, was taken to the Presbyterian hospital, Manhattan, after having been struck down by an attack of apoplexy. On Tuesday week last his daughter. Lillian A., died of tuberculosis; on the Saturday evening following his wife died in the French hospital, West Thirtyfourth street, after undergoing a serious surgical operation; and, on the Wednesday evening preceding. his son. when about to visit his mother, fell fainting at the door of the hospital and was revived with some difficulty. The daughter was buried on Good Friday, without the knowledge of her parents, and it was equally impossible to inform the unconscious husband of the death of his wife. In the case of this afflicted family are verified the words of Shakespeare, “When sorrows come, they come not single spies, hut in battalions.”
