Accidents to Fireman in Handling Playpipes.

Accidents to Fireman in Handling Playpipes.

To the Editor of FIRE AND WATER:

The many serious and fatal accidents to pipemen while handling nozzles, with our modern and improved pressures, show conclusively that there should be some radical reform made in the handling of streams. The most sickening sight of the kind on record was that which was witnessed by a number of persons at Seattle (Wash.) recently, when a pipe attached to a line of hose from the fireboat became unmanageable from the pressure, and left the hands of the pipeman. The stream stiuck one of the crew, Herman Lawson, threw him to the ground and roiled him along many yards, on the way carrying him over a six-inch spike, which entered his body, tearing it open and leaving his entrails protruding, to the horror of all present. Everything was done to alleviate his sufferings, but he died in a few hours in great agony.
