Acaculpo Theatre Disaster.

Acaculpo Theatre Disaster.

Over 200 persons perished when the Mores theatre at Acaculpo, Mexico, caught fire during a moving-picture exhibition. A film ignited, and the flames spread to the bunting that formed part of the decorations put up in honor of a State governor’s presence—an event which, also, caused the building to be packed to the doors. There were only three narrow exits, and those who were not trodden to death in the panic, thereby blocking the means of exit, were roasted to death. There was not smoke heavy or abundant enough to cause unconsciousness and suffocation, and the flames overtook and surrounded those who could not escape. The roof, also, collapsed, quickening the end of some. The bodies were piled one on the top of another and so disfigured by fire and the feet of those who had trodden them down as not to be recognised. They were, therefore, buried in long trenches dug by the city authorities. The building was of wood and utterly unequipped for fire protection. and, besides, was profusely decorated, rendering easy the spread of the fire.
