THE situation of Key West on an island surrounded by the sea makes the system described by Mr. Wetmore a unique one, it being of course supplied by salt water and designed to be used for fire protection only. However, as he suggests, a similar plan with fresh water supply could be adopted by small municipalities in low lying sections of the country and such wells would undoubtedly supply economically an ample volume of zvater for fire protection.
