The recent visit of a Baltimorean to a town on the eastern shore, at a celebration several weeks ago, brings the following good story to The Baltimore Underwriter: “After the parade he was invited to inspect one of the steam fire engines. The chief of the department, who was also clerk of one of the courts and a special officer, explained the working of the engines, the system of alarms, etc., and then gave several thrilling accounts of big fires in the past few years. One of these proved very amusing. It was nearly midnight when an alarm was sent in from one of the districts near the river. The engine was run out, and in a few minutes was at the scene of the conflagration. Through an ‘ oversight ’ the reel was left behind. A fireman was dispatched for it, but he brought the wrong hose ; it would not fit the engine’s nozzle. Meanwhile the fire was gaining headway. Another fireman was sent for the four-inch hose, which he brought in pretty good time, but it proved to be the hose which had been decorated for the parade, and the chief positively refused to allow it to be used. The chief now became desperate. He rushed to the engine-house himself, and looked high and low for the much-desired hose. He was about to give up the search, when he learned from a bystander that there was a reel of hose up such-and-such a street in front of Mr. Blank’s house. There it was, sure enough. Mr. Blank, who is one of the fire commissioners, had placed it there to be used in case the fire reached his house. Willing hands soon had the hose at the fire, which was finally put out, but not until considerable damage had been done.”
