Two Critical after Downtown Aurora (IL) Fire

Mar. 30—Two people are in critical condition after an early morning fire at a building in downtown Aurora Wednesday, including a woman who jumped from a third-floor window to escape the blaze.

Five others sustained minor injuries during the fire, according to officials.

Firefighterswere dispatched to 15 N. Broadway for a structure fire around 12:23 a.m. after receiving calls that people were trapped in the back of the building, Aurora Fire Department officials said.

It took firefighters around 30 minutes to extinguish the fire and evacuate the three-story building, which houses an insurance company on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors.

A 50-year-old woman is in critical condition after she suffered significant injuries when she jumped from a third-floor window to an adjacent roof about 20 feet below to escape the fire. Firefighters rescued her from the roof using a ground ladder with a basket, officials said.

A 58-year-old man is also in critical condition from severe smoke inhalation, officials said.

All seven people injured during the fire were taken to hospitals for treatment. In addition to the two in critical condition, a 43-year-old man, 43-year-old woman, a 36-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman and a 9-year-old girl were taken to the hospital for minor injuries or smoke inhalation.

A 50-year-old firefighter sustained a minor injury during the fire, but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.

Police closed Broadway between East Galena Boulevard and New York Street for around three hours due to the fire, with the road reopened later Wednesday morning.
