An early morning fire at a modular home in the 3200 block of South Belt West in Belleville brought out at least 25 firefighters from multiple departments Wednesday.

No one was injured in the blaze, Northwest Fire Protection District Chief Chester Borkowski said, but two homes were destroyed.

The mobile homes are within a block of the fire department.

“When firefighters were readying to leave, they could see from their bay windows that the structure was fully involved,” Borkowski said.

He said firemen were on the scene within two minutes of the call.

“Two modular home were on fire at the same time. Our first priority was to make sure everyone made it out,” he said. “That was confirmed for us by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.”

The majority of the fire was under control within 20 minutes, he said.

The American Red Cross arrived at the scene to assist the family with immediate personal needs and temporary shelter.

Signal Hill, Belleville, Fairview Heights, Swansea, Villa Hills and Millstadt fire departments responded. Extreme weather conditions, such as the winter storm that hit the area Wednesday, require additional firefighters to provide relief, Borkowski said.

“We got great support from Abbott EMS,” he said. “They were on the scene to check on the firefighters to make sure they are OK.”
