Mar. 1—HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — An adult entertainment business has been written off as a “total loss” after a fire early Tuesday morning that shut down traffic to the Talmadge Bridge for several hours.
According to Russell Wells, the director of emergency services for Jasper County, the fire at Club Karma in Hardeeville was reported by a passerby shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Firefighters and police responded to the scene to find “heavy fire conditions,” Wells said. Firefighters “had to back out for safety” and focus on the exterior of the building.
The club was closed when the fire was reported, and Wells said that to his knowledge, nobody was in the building when the fire was reported. The building is “a total loss,” he said.
Desmond Duval of D&D Productions, an event promotion company that has worked frequently with Club Karma, said the club is always closed on Monday nights.
Chief Deputy Jeff Crosby with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning that the S.C. Law Enforcement Division’s Arson Investigation Unit was called to the scene to look for a cause of the fire.
Wells did not have information Tuesday on possible causes for the fire or where it originated in the building, citing the pending investigation.
The building does not have a distributive water supply, and law enforcement officials closed U.S. Highway 17 to shuttle water to the fire site. Wells estimated that the roadway was closed for around three hours prior to 8 a.m. department
In total, five fire departments and four police departments were on the scene. Levy Volunteer Fire Department, Jasper County Fire-Rescue, Hardeeville Fire Department and the Savannah Fire Department responded, along with Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Savannah Police Department, Hardeeville Police Department and South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Nobody was injured during the response, Wells said.
