Firefighters later found David S. Johnson, 59, dead inside the home. They also found a dog that had succumbed to the flames.
Portland Fire & Rescue said firefighters faced a heavy blaze coming through the front door of the house. It was difficult to get through the house and suppress the flames long enough to find the man and dog trapped inside, the agency said. “Hoarder-like” conditions inside the home also “added fuel to the rapidly growing fire,” according to the agency. An interior wall fell as firefighters found an inferno throughout the entire home, forcing the crews to fight the fire from outside, the agency said.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze. Two neighbors on their way to work initially saw the flames and tried to rescue the residents before fire crews arrived.
Portland Fire & Rescue reminded residents to install and regularly test smoke alarms in every bedroom and on every level of homes, including basements. The agency did not say whether the home had working smoke alarms.
