A three-year-old child was injured in an early morning fire that resulted in the child’s father being arrested on arson charges.
According to the Rogersville Fire Department, crews were called to a structure fire at Rogersville Park Apartments at 4:45 a.m. today.
Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the top floor.
Rogersville police officer Tyler Dison was out on patrol and responded at the scene, having heard the dispatch call, before firefighters arrived.
Dison made forced entry into the apartment and rescued the child, according to the fire department.
Dison, who had burns to his arm and a melted uniform from the heat, transported the child in his police car to meet the incoming ambulance. The child was transported to North Alabama Medical Center, and later flown to UAB by Air-Evac.
Rogersville Fire Chief Frankie Phillips arrived on the scene and made a forced entry to the bottom apartment and helped remove a resident trying to flee.
Firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes. Other departments assisted in the action, including Anderson, Elgin, Center Star, and Killen Fire Department.
According to WHNT,Jared Lynn Hazelwood, 44, is charged with seven counts of first degree arson. Hazelwood was booked into the Lauderdale County Jail on a $420,000 bond.
Rogersville Police expect more charges to be filed against Hazelwood, including attempted murder.
