Maple Heights (OH) Candy Warehouse Catches Fire

Firefighters from a dozen departments worked to keep a fire from reaching an ammonia room in an industrial complex Thanksgiving Day, reports cleveland.com.

Ammonia produces dangerous gases when burned.

An early morning fire gutted the Fannie May candy distribution center on Rockside road. The center is in the middle of a sprawling complex that also includes a food service building.

Firefighters said around 11 a.m. that they had kept the fire from spreading to other buildings. Several departments sent hazmat trucks as a precaution.

Most of the Fannie May warehouse had been razed to the ground and spots were still burning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the complex more than a mile away.

Capt. Rick Teckmyer of the Maple Heights Fire Department said the first priority was keeping the fire from spreading to an ammonia room and the second priority was to keep other buildings from catching fire.

Police closed Rockside Road near the entrance to the industrial complex and a mobile command center sat in a parking lot near the fire.

消防员和救护人员从the Maple Heights, Bedford, Bedford Heights, Garfield Heights, Highland Hills, Brecksville, Oakwood, Independence, Brooklyn Heights, Broadview Heights, Solon and Shaker Heights battled the fire as the morning went on.
