Syracuse, N.Y. — Heavy flames and smoke could be seen coming from the back of a two-family home Friday night in the city’s Eastwood neighborhood, firefighters said.

At 8:39 p.m., fire crews responded to structure fire at 164 Mildred Ave., according to a news release issued Friday night by the Syracuse Fire Department. It was initially reported that people were still inside the home.

Firefighters arrived at the 2.5-story, wood-frame home in minutes and immediately began attacking the fire and searching for occupants, according to the release.

In total, 34 firefighters responded to the fire and it was fully extinguished in about 30 minutes.

All eight residents of the home were located and no injuries were reported, firefighters said.

Three uninjured cats were also found on the second floor of the home, firefighter said.

The Syracuse Police Department, National Grid and the local chapter of the American Red Cross also responded to assist the residents.

The Fire Investigation Bureau is currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

The 100 block of Mildred Avenue remains closed, and people are asked to avoid the area.
