A volunteer firefighter died from injuries he suffered at a large barn fire,reports KGW 8.

Saint Paul (OR) Fire District firefighters were sent to a large barn fire and shortly after firefighters arrived, there was an explosion and Smith was severely injured. According toa report on oregonlive.com, St. Paul Rural Fire Protection District Chief Bryan Lee said Smith was taking part in defensive operations after the agricultural structure on Champoeg Creek Lane Northeast burned about 4 a.m. There were reportedly no other injuries in the explosion.
He was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) hospital, where he died from his injuries.
According tothe U.S. Fire Administration notice, on Thursday, February 3, 2022, St. Paul Fire District firefighters responded to a three-alarm barn fire on Champoeg Creek Lane NE. While firefighters worked to put out the fire, an explosion occurred, critically injuring Firefighter Austin Smith. He was immediately flown to the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland, Oregon, where he passed away a short time later. Investigation into the incident continues.
