More than a dozen homes are being evacuated as authorities respond to an electrical fire under a Queens sidewalk, reports NBC New York.
About 200 people are being affected by the evacuations in Astoria; many are being told to leave the area as a precaution, fire officials said.
“We heard some explosions, and then you could see the fire coming out of the sidewalk,” neighbor Carlo Lari said. “You actually saw it coming closer toward this house, and that’s when they told us, ‘You should leave.'”
A heavy emergency presence was on 36th Street between 23rd and 24th avenues, and Con Edison trucks are at the scene.
