Dozens of Animals Rescued, Residents Jump from Window in CT Boarding House Fire

According to a report fromNBC Connecticut, the Westport (CT) Fire Department (WFD) and local police rescued about 50 dogs and cats from an animal boarding facility as residents jumped from a window to escape a fire in the mixed-occupancy building Wednesday night.

WFD crews were dispatched to the facility on Post Road East at 11:43 p.m. and arrived to find heavy fire on the second floor and began attacking fire with hose. The building houseda dog and cat boarding facilityon the first floor and basement as well as one apartment on the second floor, said WFD officials.

WFD officials said three occupants in the second-floor apartment were awakened by smoke detectors, but flames blocked the exit, forcing them to jump from the second-floor window. The residents were treated at the scene by Westport EMS and did not need to be hospitalized.

The Westport fire marshal’s office is now looking into the cause of the fire, and the WFD urged residents to have working smoke detectors in their houses because they save lives.
