A Bridgeport (CT) firefighter jumped from a second-floor window during a fire at a boarding house, reports the Connecticut Post.
Eric McCalla was not injured in the hasty retreat, Assistant Chief Robert Morton said. McCalla had been checking for residents in the interior of the brick row house.
Although the initial reports said that an elderly man was trapped inside, all of the residents had gotten out safely before firefighters arrived, Morton said.
“Sometimes our guys get ahead of our hose lines to make sure there is no one left behind,” Morton said. “I’m not exactly sure what happened that he bailed, but he got out fast.'”
The fire started in the first-floor rear, in a combination kitchen and sitting area, the assistant chief said, but the cause is not yet known. The tenant in that unit was not at home when the fire broke out at 12:20 p.m.
The fire spread to the second and third floor, the next to last of eight identical units. Many residents watched the fire from a church yard across the street.
