A young girl was killed, another was hospitalized and 23 other people from four families were displaced Sunday after a house fire in Plainfield, authorities said.
The early morning fire began inside a home on North Avenue in Plainfield, according to the New Jersey Red Cross.
“Our hearts are with the families affected by the fire on North Ave in Plainfield,” Red Cross volunteers said in a tweet on Monday.
ABC-7 reportedfirefighters and police arrived to find people trapped inside the home on North Avenue near Johnston Avenue. As rescuers searched inside, they found an unresponsive girl and another child suffering from smoke inhalation, according to the new station.
Plainfield Deputy Chief Joseph Franklin said in a statement toTapIntoPlainfieldthat the girl died at the scene, while the surviving child was taken to Hackensack Meridian Health JFK Medical Center in Edison. No other injuries were reported, the chief said.
Fire officials did not immediately respond early Monday to requests for more information about the fire.
Members of the New Jersey Red Cross tweeted they were providing emergency assistance for the families displaced by the fire, including lodging, food, mental health services, clothing and other needs.
