A veteran Newport Beach (CA) lifeguard died while trying torescuea distressed swimmer at the beach on Sunday.
Newport Beach Fire Department Chief Scott Poster told reporters that Ben Carlson, who attempted to rescue the swimmer at about 5 p.m. Sunday, was struck by a large wave after making contact with the man. Other lifeguard personnel at the scene attempted to rescue and assist Ben, but were unable to find him because of the turbulentwater.
Carlson’s body was found about 8 p.m. The swimmer Carlson swam out torescuemade it back to shore.
It was the first lifeguardline-of-duty deathin the city in more than 100 years.
