A fire in East Boston forced 19 residents from their homes intothe frigid cold of an Arctic frontjust after 12 a.m. Tuesday.

The Boston Fire Department said the fire on Meridian Street affected the second and third floors of a triple-decker home, displacing the group of nearly 20 residents.

With wind chills Monday night into Tuesday morning dipping to nearly zero degrees in Boston, the MBTA deployed a bus to East Boston to keep residents warm.

The temperature Monday matched a record for the coldest high temperature on March 28 at 33 degrees. The day had not had that low a peak temperature in 129 years, according to the National Weather Service.

The Red Cross was helping the group with housing, officials said. No one was injured in the fire.
