By Tom Kiurski

National EMS Week is a great time to get some positive public relations for your efforts. Consider teaming up with your local cable companies, broadcast arts interns, or college cable stations to make some EMS Week public service announcements (PSAs). These can be brief reminders about your dedication to life safety or can give viewers a visual “tour” of one of your EMS vehicles. You can interview several members who will discuss EMS–possibly one who recently finished schooling and another, more experienced medic to add a few real-life experiences to the broadcast.

An article in your local newspaper may be a great way to introduce your role in EMS to your community. Discuss this with the editor in advance to find out length, format, and submission requirements. The newspaper may do the writing, while you provide the information and people to interview. The paper may use your article and run it as a “guest editorial.” Don’t ignore college newspapers. They often have student staff writers who are just waiting for your call to start the story.

Consider staging a mock car crash at a school, with plenty of publicity. These events are typically huge draws in the community. How about a teddy bear clinic, to care for those stuffed animals that kids love? Car seat checks are also very appropriate during EMS Week, as well as bike checkups and CPR classes. This would also be a great time to let your community know about your Public Access Defibrillation Program.

One great resource to find out more about publicizing your EMS efforts is the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), sponsors of EMS Week. The EMS Week Planning Kit in available free from the ACEP Web site www.acep.org. You will also find downloads and information sheets.
