Feb. 18—Two fire departments responded after a tree fell onto an elderly man near Springfield Baptist Church in Trenton.

The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. on the 800 block of Springfield Church Road. The Center Fire Department was called to assist at 4:05 p.m.

The man was cutting down a tree at his residence when the tree came down on him, according to Lt. Ken Finucan with the Center Fire Department.

“The tree came down on the entire length of his body,” Finucan said.

His family helped to lift the tree off of him before first responders arrived.

The man is in critical condition and is reported to have a head and hip injury, but is expected to survive. EMS responded to the scene and a helicopter took him to Augusta University hospital.

Finucan said the family being present during the incident saved his life.

“Anytime you’re doing tree working with trees, you’ve got to be extremely careful,” he said. “Never do it alone, always have someone with you. If that tree came down on that man and he was alone, he would have laid on the ground until he died.”

Finucan said the man was very fortunate but the public should be cautious when doing yard work.
