Nearly every firefighting unit has a company officer; you know—the member who sits in the right front seat and blows the siren and horn. Is there a selection process for the company officer in your department? Some are promoted after testing, some are designated by a newly appointed chief, and some have a process “in between.”

Although how one becomes and officer varies greatly from department to department, the role of the company officer is certainly similar wherever you go. Carrying out the job of a company officer becomes an extremely pivotal position in every fire department, on the fireground and in the firehouse.
