A Twitter post stated that fire was on the sixth floor and spreading laterally. Apartments next to and below the unit that caught fire suffered smoke and water damage.

“Firefighters did a great job containing the main body of fire to the apartment of origin on the sixth floor,” said New Haven Fire Lieutenant Frank Ricci. “Several occupants wererescuedand others were protected in place.” Ricci said the fire was in a 17-story high-raise with no sprinklers and only a standpipe. Despite the firefighters’ valiant efforts, one victim perished due to their injuries. The cause of the fire, which went to three alarms, is still under investigation.

One firefighter was hospitalized with a foot injury, while another reportedly suffered chest pains, which Ricci attributed to possible smoke inhalation. Both are expected to recover.
