Detailed For The Tour
By Michael Ciampo
You walk into the fire station and head back into the kitchen for your morning cup of coffee and to catch up on the scuttlebutt from the departing shift. No sooner do you begin to pour the cup, when you hear the dreaded news: “Hey, you’ve got the detail this tour, so you’d better have our foursome squared away.” Suddenly, your normal routine has taken an abrupt turn. Your ideas, tasks, and goals you wanted to accomplish this tour are now possibly put on hold. No longer do you feel comfortable, feelings of uncertainty about the detail and scheduling the picnic and golf begin to creep into your mind. Immediately you ask; “Where’s the detail to?” and the response is, “Over across town to Ladder 3.” You glance around the kitchen and throw the question out there: “Anyone want to go to 3?” The laughs and blank stares of “no thanks” are all you get.
As you arrive you find everyone in the kitchen, you make your introductions, and the officer assigns you the left jump seat. Well, now you feel a little at ease–the left jump seat is part of the outside team. You’ll be working with the chauffeur and since you’re regularly assigned to a truck, you’re very comfortable with this assignment. Just then the probationary firefighter informs the officer that the equipment and masks are ready for service. With all of these facts processed, you decide to grab a second cup of coffee, since the first one didn’t go down so well. As you pour the cup, you notice the headlines on the paper; you pick it up and decide to sit down and read it. While you’re reading the paper, you keep glancing at the television set and the morning news programs. About 20 minutes have passed, and now the television is on ESPN Sports Center. You wouldn’t miss this favorite part of your daily routine for anything. Suddenly, the tone alert goes off with a deafening blast and signals the company’s response to a structural fire.
Quickly you leap up and exit the kitchen, running over to grab your bunker gear you left dumped in a pile on the apparatus floor in the rear of the station. You pick it up and head for the left side of the truck, kicking off your shoes en route. The truck’s air brake releases, and you can see the chauffeur glancing at you through the side-view mirror, waiting patiently for you to board. Quickly, with this added pressure, you throw your bunker gear on and toss your helmet and flashlight aboard. As you sit down and the truck lurches forward, you notice a radio by your side. Now you fling one arm out of the coat and sling the radio over your head and shoulder. Sliding back into the seat, you realize that the strap feels like a noose around your body. There’s no time to readjust it because you’re unsure of how long a response this may be, so you’ll have to suffer and operate with it in this position.
While responding, your ears strive to listen to the radio amidst the blaring siren and air horns. The company arrives first due at a one-story commercial building with smoke showing. As the chauffeur exits the cab, he tells you to help him set up the truck and then throw a portable ladder to the roof. While you accomplish these tasks, he runs the saw over to you and says, “Open the roof; I’ll be up in a minute.” As you descend over the parapet and remove the sling from the saw, you notice the saw is much different from the one you’re accustomed to. It takes a few precious seconds to look it over and figure out how it operates in a rapidly changing smoke condition.
在the ride over to the detail, get into the proper frame of mind, become an asset to a company and not a hindrance. Walking in with that “I don’t want to be here” look or attitude will only make your tour seem like it will last forever. In case you forgot, on the ride over look in the rear-view mirror and see the uniform you’re wearing. It’s the same one the firefighters are wearing in the detailed fire station. Also, realize that it’s just for a tour and that a change in surroundings can be informative and open your eyes to a larger portion of “the job.”
The walk-around also gives you insight into what things are in what compartments. Playing the guessing game when you arrive on a scene not only looks ridiculous but also looks unprofessional and costs us valuable time.
After the tour of the apparatus is complete, glance around the apparatus floor. Perhaps there is a specialized apparatus in quarters and you may have to be a part of it. Glance around at the walls around the apparatus, near the company office, or any bulletin board. Normally, most companies have some type of information board describing out-of-service equipment, street closings, company policy, and any other pertinent information that may be helpful.
Now as you head back into the kitchen for that well-deserved cup of coffee, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy it, knowing exactly where your gear and tools of the trade await you. When you get back into the kitchen, it’s time to get involved and mesh with the company you’re detailed to, be social, try to fit in, and help with the daily routine. Sitting down on the soft sofa with the television clicker in your hand isn’t what you want them to remember you for. If they refuse your help, then at least you “stepped” up to offer a hand. Also, while you’re out on runs, it’s important to be part of the company; it’s your job to assist them and get them the equipment they need to do the job. You’re part of their company for that particular tour and what you do with them will be associated with their company’s reputation and pride. So remember: The impression you make on them not only reflects on you as an individual firefighter but also on your company and its reputation.
