The Late Lays of “Big Six.”
After Six Engine left the old Fifth Ward, she was re-organized on the east side of the city, the first meeting being held at Mather's Ink Factory. Front street, near Gouverneur. December II, 1848. Among those present was Williarn A. Freeman, President of the Dry Dock Floating Co. The second meeting was held at No. 3 Hester street. at what was th~ n known as the "Vivarambla," ;~ place of Ii~dir dramatic entertainment, and the startingpoint in the brilliant career of the great come dian, William J. Florence, whose impersona tion of the characters of Rob f?rier/y, "The Ticket of I `:~v~ Man," and Obenrei:.'r in I)ickens' "No Thoroughfare had it~ start. . t this latter meeting it was announce I that the City Fathers had agreed to locate the com pany when fully oF~anizcd in the old house of Black Joke Engine No. 33, on Gouverneur street. At this mcetin~ the now eel ebra ted Ross Tweed became a member. ft~vil M. Smith was elected first Foreman, George I). Dcmilt was elected Assistant Foreman, Wm. M. Tweed Secretary, and John B. (~ulder Treasurer.
