Mar. 23—A Manchester firefighter suffered second-degree burns battling a brush fire off Interstate 293 on Tuesday afternoon in the city’s North End.
Manchester Fire Battalion Chief Ken Proulx said fire crews responded to reports of a brush fire off Interstate 293 northbound, near Country Club Drive, around 2:19 p.m. Tuesday.
They found an area of brush approximately 50 by 100 feet on fire.
“Due to the high winds, the fire spread quickly away from the highway and towards a parking lot off of Country Club Drive,” Proulx said in a statement.
Additional companies were dispatched to the rear of 8 Country Club Drive to help get the fire under control. Heavy smoke made its way into the building, setting off the fire alarm system, Proulx said. Some residents were able to move their vehicles from the approaching flames before they sustained any damage, and any remaining vehicles were protected by firefighters using hand lines.
Approximately two acres were burned, Proulx said.
One firefighter suffered second-degree burns to a hand and was taken to Catholic Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.
