WELLS

At Crown Point Ind., while an 8-inch well was being driven in connection with the new water works system, crude oil was struck at 50 feet depth. It will be a paying strike.

An almost perfect cedar tree was recently discovered buried at a depth of 170 feet below the surface of the earth, near Eureka, Wash., by well diggers. Large pieces of the trunk and branches were taken out, and so well preserved was the tree that the grain of the wood was very plain. The well was dug through soft soil, and soapstone and a little basaltic rock near the surface.
