WELL WATER AT BAKERSFIELD.
In drilling a water well anywhere in the vicinity of Bakersfield, Cal., water is encountered at from eight to ten feet and from then on to a depth of eighty or ninety feet there are continuous strata of sand and water and occasionally in some localities a stratum of clay between the surface water and that of great depth. When the drill penetrates beyond 100 feet no water is to be found. A few months ago H. H. Schultz, operating for the Electric Water company, and using a steam outfit, undertook to drill a well to a greater depth than usual. He passed through the successive water-bearing strata to the usual depth of deep wells and then continued to send the drill down. He penetrated the earth to a depth of 275 feet and completed the well. A steam pump exhausted the water in five minutes and not another drop would the well produce. The casing was not perforated where it passed through the water strata, and the last 150 feet was barren of moisture.
