THE author of this article and the officer in charge of the Marine Corps Fire Department, of the Washington Navy Yard began his career as a student before the World War, and when the United States entered the conflict enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving with the 17th Company, 5th Regiment, and participating in every engagement in which the marines were entered. At the close of the war he returned to school but after two years again enlisted in the Marine Corps and was placed in charge of the fire department.
