According to the report of 1917 of the Wausau, Wis., fire department, Chief Frank F. Zielsdorf, the actual fire loss to owners of property and contents here amounted to only $844.40. The loss on buildings and contents amounted to $19,348.06. During the year four automobile fires occurred, the loss amounting to $647. The department responded to 241 fire alarms, as follows: Telephone calls, 185; box calls, forty-eight; A. D. T. calls, five; still calls, three. The causes of alarms were: Chimney fires, 145; actual fires, fifty-eight; clogged chimneys, eleven; overheated furnace pipes, nine; grass fires, six; automobile fires, four; false alarms, eight. During the year the firemen worked 122 hours, raised 3,565 feet of ladders, laid 26,800 feet of hose, used 377 gallons of chemicals, and the horse-drawn apparatus traveled 108 miles and 1,710 feet. The auto truck traveled 195.2 miles, making 185.5 miles to fires and 11.2 miles for practice runs; used 159 gallons of gasoline and 14 gallons of oil. Appended to the chief’s report is a copy ol the law providing one day of rest at certain times for city firemen. Wausau is a city in third class, which provides for one full rest day of twenty-four consecutive hours during each ninety-six hours. Chief Zielsdorf reports the firemen are perfectly satisfied of having a full twenty-four hours of rest every sixth_ day, providing they secured the additional salary asked by them.
