The city of Waterloo, Ont., has a population of 5,000. Its fire department, of which George A. Karges is chief, consists of a horse-drawn hose wagon and a ladder truck, operated by fifteen men, two of them paid and the others call men, and 3,000 feet of hose. It has a Gamewell fire alarm telegraph system with ten street boxes. The call chief receives a salary of $150 per annum and his assistant $100. The paid firemen receive $850. The department station is one of the best in Canada. There is a gravity water system which can be made direct pumping if necessary.
