Water Supply of Lawrence
The special commission appointed two years ago to investigate and report as to a new water supply for Lawrence, Mass., has submitted a report to the City Council. The commission had investigated certain water supplies and was prepared to recommend the seizure of lands and water rights in Methuen and other sections, including Bartletts Brook, so as to give to the city an additional water supply. At the same time Methuen officials expended money to obtain surveys for a water supply for Methuen. A bill has been introduced by the Methuen officials authorizing that city to acquire certain rights which Lawrence had included in the plan adopted by the special water commission. It now seems as if the plans recommended by the water commission will be of no avail. Members of the commission informed the city council that they had received information from State officials that in a few years the State would assume control over the water rights in this city and adjoining cities and towns. Consequently the commission did not recommend the adoption of the plans submitted by it. Meanwhile the city will improve the filter galleries and will also carry out the instructions of the State Department of Health. This means that the city will be called upon to expend large sums of money in increasing the water supply.
