WATER RATES

WATER RATES

The Indiana Public Service Commission has partially granted a petition filed by V. A. Harding, superintendent of the Goshen municipal water and light plant, asking for higher rates. Disregarding the general outline of the petition, the commission changed the basis of rates from thousands of gallons to hundreds of cubic feet. Under the ruling, a maximum rate of 11 cents per hundred cubic feet and a minimum rate of six cents per hundred cubic feet are fixed. The minimum meter charge is reduced from $7.50 per year to $6 per year.

Adoption of a budget ordinance by the officials of Cheltenham Township with an appropriation of $2,300 for fire hydrant rentals in 1919, is specific indication that the authorities intend to fight what they consider the “unjust and exorbitant” charge of the Springfield Water Company, and, if necessary, to carry the protest against payment to higher courts. Under the ruling which permits the Springfield Water Company to levy a $355 per mile a year rental charge on pipe lines supplying fire hydrants, the annual bill to the township would be approximately $10,000, possibly higher.
