Was It a Radical Change.
Simultaneous retirement of Commissioner Ennis and Chief Engineer Nevins makes a wide difference in the Brooklyn Fire Department situation. After his reinstatement by Justice Landon’s order, Ennis behaved unexpectedly well by declining to fill the vacancy caused by the withdrawal of Kevins. What moved Ennis to this surprising self-restraint may never be known, but the general opinion is that he wanted to disarm criticism for his many derelictions by showing reasonable courtesy to his successor. Ennis was supposed to be nearer the auction room “ throne ” than any of the outgoing Commissioners, with the possible exception of Schliemann. Some cynical wag suggests that Ennis actually intends to turn reformer and join in the movement to reorganize the Democratic party in Kings County.
Almost equally amusing are some of the comments on Nevins’s retirement. About two weeks ago The Brooklyn F^agle, which for years had commended Nevins’s work and defended him from criticism, turned on him with this extraordinary outburst of vituperation :
