U. S. Air Force Assists in Controlling Marietta, Ohio, Plastics Plant Blaze
Airborne Mutual Aid
AN EXPLOSION of benzene vapors at the Marietta, Ohio, plant of Union Carbide Plastics Division on April 27, killed one employee and hospitalized three others, while the ensuing fire caused the activation of a rare instance of airborne mutual aid. The blast ruptured piping in the plant, causing the release of nearly 40,000 gallons of flammable liquids which immediately ignited. Fire fighting operations were conducted mainly with foam and as the supply, gathered from every available source in the area, began to run low, several calls for assistance to outside sources were made.
