CONSERVATIVE estimates of the fire loss in the United States for the first quarter of 1890 show a decrease of over seven and a half millions of dollars from that for the same period last year. This is a decidedly cheering exhibit, but the vagaries of the fire fiend are many and curious, and we are not yet far enough through the woods to halloo too lustily.
STILL another important water-works case has been brought before the courts, the Los Angeles City Water Company seeking to prevent the Sierra Madre Water Company from building works or laying pipes to supply Los Angeles with water. As this latter company, which was recently incorporated, has received a franchise from the city, while the former claims to already possess the exclusive right to operate works, a determined legal contest may be expected.
