BOSTON’S fire losses during the year 1886, according to Superintendent Abbott of the Protective Department, amounted to $905,081. Of the 687 fires which occurred, 239 caused no damage. The average loss caused by each of the remaining 448 was $2,431.24.
LAST week the finance committee of the Chicago city council decided on an increase of five per cent in the salaries of the fire department, from the Chief down. This is a creditable and well-deserved recognition of the meritorious services and the efficiency of the members of the Chicago department.
