TOPICS OF THE DAY
CHIEFS of Departments owe it to themselves and to their communities that the necessities of their Departments be made known, and Commissioners or other municipal authorities should see to it that these reports are respected and the material furnished. Winter with its many dangers from the ravages by fire is upon us, and the people ought not to be subjected to the perils of dereliction of duty.
IN the Firemen's barracks, in Paris, is found a marble slab, upon which figure the names of the men who have died while on duty. A recent decision of ’the municipal council has just introduced in this body one of the most laudable traditions of the army. At each reunion, a sergeant-major will call these names, and a sergeant will answer “ died at the fire.” Thus the municipal council places in the same rank the Firemen and the first soldier of France.
