TOPICS OF THE DAY.
THE JOURNAL recently copied from an exchange an item to the effect that a Hook and Ladder Truck made by Buckley & Merritt, for Newton, Conn., had been condemned, and sent back to the manufacturers. The facts simply were that the springs on the Truck were found to be insufficient, and the apparatus was returned to have the defect remedied. This having been done, the Truck has been returned and placed in service. We allude to this for the reason that blame sometimes attaches to manufacturers for which they are in no wise responsible, as in this instance. No manufacturer makes all parts of the apparatus he sends out. There are large establishments whose sole business it is to make springs for all kinds of vehicles; others make wheels ; others make other specialities. It is their business and their interest to make them in the best possible manner. Manufacturers of Steam Fire Engines, Hook and Ladder Trucks, Hose Carriages, etc., buy these specialities from those who make a business of making them. Occasionally there is a defect in the construction of them, and the blame falls upon the builder of the apparatus, when it should rest with the maker of the springs, or the wheels that give out. Such accidents as happened to the Newton Truck are expensive to the apparatus builder, and are deprecated by no one more than he. Purchasers of apparatus should, therefore, use discrimination when criticising the articles purchased. We regret to note that rival builders sometimes take advantage of these accidents to depreciate the work of their competitors. No one knows better than they how unfair this is, nor can they tell how soon they may be placed in a similar dilemma.
阿轮公司的劳伦斯,质量。,我s famous for making wheels for fire apparatus. They work under a patent obtained by Mr. Archibald, and the wheels made by them stand the wear and tear of the hardest service. All the apparatus in use in this city and Brooklyn is mounted on these wheels, and no accidents have happened except such as are incidental to legitimate wear and tear.
