The Topeka, Kansas, Department.
The Fire Department of Topeka numbers entire sixteen men, this number being divided for duty upon the north and south sides of the river. The appatatus consists of one Ahrens steam fire engine, with capacity to discharge 600 gallons of water per minute, two one-horse hose reels, one supply reel, one two-horse chemical engine, carrying 150 gallons of chemical fluid ready for immediate use, and one hook and ladder truck. Also one two-horse chemical engine, 156 gallons capacity, with two men and one Assistant Engineer stationed upon the north side of the river, one thirdclass Silsby steam fire engine in reserve, but at present out of repair. Six cisterns with capacity from 1,000 to 1,800 barrels each, furnish the water supply. The workings of the Department are well systematized, and good discipline prevails throughout. The personnel of the Department is good, and the enginehouscs are as quiet and orderly as any business house in the city. Topeka has the finest trained fire horses in the State. The officers of the Department are : Chief Engineer, G. O. Wilmarth; First Assistant Engineer, J. A. Polley ; Second Assistant, Clay Bowen.
