The apparatus consists of four Steam Engines, one in reserve ; one Chemical Fire Extinguisher, one Ilootc and Ladder Truck, five Hose Carriages, one in reserve. The Steamers are all in good condition except one, which needs slight repairs. The Hose Carriages, having been in use a long time, are nearly worn out and must soon be replaced by new ones. The purchase of one is almost an immediate necessity. There is now in the Department about 11,000 feet of hose, 5,000 feet of which is first-class. One thousand feet of new hose was purchased and added the past year. The alarms have been transmitted with rapidity and correctness. There are now thirty-four signal boxes in this branch of the service. The extension of the line, and an addition of at least five signal boxes, is an urgent necessity. The present force of the Department consists of thirty-four paid men including officers, all properly uniformed.
