THE “METROPOLITAN” STEAM FIRE ENGINE.
The accompanying illustrations show the “Metropolitan” steam fire engine, the latest product of the American Fire Engine Company, of Seneca Falls, N. Y,. and pronounced by experts to be a most advanced and perfect specimen of the piston type of fire engine. The simplicity of its construction and the accessibility of its parts are noticeable characteristics of this splendid fir efighting machine.
The first “Metropolitan" engine was designed especially for service in the fire department of the city of New York, where the results obtained have led to its ready adoption by other large cities. The engine is built to last; no effort or expense being spared to make it as excellent and efficient and durable as may be possible. Provision is made for taking up in its various parts any wear there may be after years of service, and in every detail the machine is as nearly perfect as labor and money can make it. The “ Metropolitan ” engine is furnished in six sizes, with pumping capacity ranging from 400 to 1,300 gallons per minute. It is hung on patent equalizing platform-spring rfgging it: front, and on half elliptic springs in the rear. The largest or “double extra first-size ” is fitted with a three-horse hitch, in addition to the regular pole for two horses, and any of the engines may be adapted to be drawn by ither horses or men, when so desired.
